Carrier identity, address, fleet and driver counts come from the FMCSA motor carrier census. Fleet figures are self-reported by the carrier and unaudited. Being listed here means a carrier has hired return-to-duty drivers before — it is not a guarantee they are hiring today. Always confirm with the recruiter.

SAP driver questions, answered for Illinois

How many trucking companies hire SAP drivers in Illinois?

This directory tracks 57 carriers in Illinois that have hired drivers returning from a DOT drug or alcohol violation, operating 7,620 power units between them across Mt Sterling, Hudson, Channahon, Joliet, Chicago Ridge and Quincy. That is the number with a confirmed FMCSA census record — the full national directory is larger.

Can I get hired in Illinois while my Clearinghouse status is still "prohibited"?

Sometimes — and it is the most important question to ask a recruiter. A driver cannot schedule their own return-to-duty test; under 49 CFR 40.305 an employer must order it, and it can only happen after your SAP has determined you successfully complied with the prescribed education or treatment. Carriers that will hire you before that test and order it for you are the ones worth calling first.

When does my status change from prohibited to not prohibited?

The FMCSA Clearinghouse states it plainly: “When the C/TPA reports the negative RTD test result, the driver's Clearinghouse status will change from ‘prohibited’ to ‘not prohibited.’” Until that result is reported, no carrier in Illinois or anywhere else may lawfully put you in a commercial vehicle.

How long does the violation stay on my record?

Per the FMCSA Clearinghouse: “Driver violation records will be available in the Clearinghouse for five years from the date of the violation determination, or until the violation is resolved through the successful completion of the return-to-duty (RTD) process and follow-up testing plan, whichever is later.” Finishing the process does not erase it early — the five years still run.

How many follow-up tests will I have to take?

A minimum of six unannounced tests in the first 12 months back on the job, and your SAP may extend the plan for up to 60 months in total. You never see the schedule in advance — 49 CFR 40.307 forbids the employer from giving it to you, which is what makes it unannounced.

Do I have to live in Illinois to apply?

Usually not. The address shown for each carrier is the one on its FMCSA census filing, which is its registered place of business — a carrier headquartered in Mt Sterling may run terminals and hire drivers in several states. Ask which domicile the job is out of before you rule it out on geography.
